The most prestigious furniture design event on the calendar, Milan Design Week is recognised as the pinnacle for many within the industry. The latest instalment of Salone del Mobile, held April 17 to 22, has again delivered visually stunning displays, as well as showcasing beautiful textures, quality craftsmanship and furniture for modern living.

This year’s fair embraced a more homely, relaxed lifestyle, as opposed to some elaborate design seen in previous years. In terms of fabrics, furniture was designed and upholstered for a tactile experience, with solid weaves and tweed a popular choice. Organic shapes and textures were paired with decorative items, many of these a fusion of industrial and handmade elements.

There was a return of colour, with an emphasis on warm, earthy colours, such as orange-reds, olive greens, teals, dusty yellows as well as inky blues. The use of curves and organic forms were trending at the fair as well as an increase in higher back, supportive sofas. Oriental influences were infused throughout design spaces, seen in thin, tapering legs on coffee tables and low-to-ground furniture. Weighted arms and backs resting on seats provided modularity and the ability to easily adjust comfort positions or the ambience of a space. King Living Designer Tanya Rechberger, says that the exhibit enables King Living to view and interact with all the top furniture suppliers. Among exhibitors, King Living showcased its new lighting range, Solifiore, designed by Charles Wilson at the Local Design event, dedicated to Australian design. The set of three botanical-inspired lamps was a nod to Australian flora.
