Learn to create a timeless bedroom with Style Director, Kerrie-Ann Jones

The bedroom is where you can truly relax. Where your mind and body have a chance to recharge.

Creating a visually beautiful and physically comfortable space is part of the answer to a great night’s sleep.

Style Director Kerrie-Ann Jones shares her top 5 bedroom styling tips to design a dreamy space for ultimate relaxation.

For Kerrie-Ann creating a tranquil sleeping space is one of the essentials to getting a good night’s sleep.

“If you love the way your bedroom is styled, you look forward to being in the space. It puts you in a great frame of mind to sleep and to start your next day.”

Sleeping well is essential for the body and mind. Quality sleep helps repair and rejuvenate, leaving you refreshed when you wake.

“Sleep is really important to me. If I get enough sleep then I have enough energy for the next day. My mind is rested and I can maximise my creativity.”

You can create your own tranquil and timeless space with a few styling secrets.

Choose your colour palette

Colours can influence your mood, which is why colour matters when it comes to relaxation. Choosing a colour palette is the first step to styling a bedroom you love. If you are unsure where to start, Kerrie-Ann advises selecting colours that are meaningful to you and are already part of your life and personal style.

Colours can influence your mood, which is why colour matters when it comes to relaxation. Choosing a colour palette is the first step to styling a bedroom you love. If you are unsure where to start, Kerrie-Ann advises selecting colours that are meaningful to you and are already part of your life and personal style.

“I look at my wardrobe and think about which colours I like to wear, and the colours I connect with. That’s a good place to start.” explains Kerrie-Ann. “Then you can choose one or two colours and go warmer and or softer within that tonal color range to create your palette.”

Kerrie-Ann also suggests looking for inspiration in colours around your home to help you pick your colour palette.

“Looking at artwork is another good starting point. You can pick out colours from your favourite artwork on the wall and use that as a palette. Matching the colours makes everything in the room cohesive and feel connected. You can find inspiration for colour anywhere.”

Create interest with layers and textures

The Jasper Bed featured in Positano Sago fabric makes a great neutral base.

When deciding on fabrics and accessories, opting for a range of textures to create layers will bring out personality and create a point of interest.

“Using layers and textures makes a room feel more interesting and homely. It adds personality to a space,” Kerrie-Ann shares. “You can think of it like photography – there is the background, the foreground, and the point of focus. It’s the same with layers; it makes a room more appealing when there is depth to the room.”

It may seem counterintuitive, but a large piece of furniture can make a room feel bigger, which the Jasper Bed has done in this space.

“Jasper is a showstopping bed that becomes a focal point in the room. It makes the room feel so comfortable and spacious, I just wanted to dive into the bed! When you see something large and visual, it looks more exciting and sophisticated. It can really open up the space.”  Kerrie-Ann explains.

Anchor the room with a rug

The Bicheno Rug in Sand brings the room together and creates balance

A rug is more than a soft furnishing underfoot. It is incredible the difference adding a rug can make to completing the look of your room.

“A rug anchors the space. It adds an extra layer and makes the bed feel like this is where it's supposed to be. The room feel more comfortable and luxurious as well.” says Kerrie-Ann.

If your bedroom has carpet, Kerrie-Ann recommends choosing a rug with a different texture.

“It's best not to lay a rug that has a similar texture to your carpet. Instead, you want to add a new layer and point of interest by choosing a different texture. You will also need to make sure the colour tones feel balanced together.”

Creating a reading nook

The Oliver Tub Chair in Whiteley Riverstone fabric has been paired with the Issho Side Table in Congo, and styled with a simple sculptural vase with an ikebana style arrangement.

If you have space, a reading nook adds an extra dimension of comfort and utility to your bedroom. Kerrie-Ann has chosen the Oliver Tub Chair, a classic style with supreme comfort.

“I love tub chairs. It’s a very on-trend shape and also very ergonomic. They cocoon you in, it makes you want to sit in there and read a book all day."

Like all KING furniture, the Oliver Tub Chair has removable covers that make it easy to clean or replace for a new seasonal look.

“I love that King furniture has removable covers for two reasons. One because I have children, and you can't help things getting dirty with kids, but also as a stylist I change my mind often and I like being able to change the fabric colour for a new season,” Kerrie-Ann shares. “Changing the cover instead of buying new furniture you also get that eco benefit”.

The right lighting matters

Kerrie-Ann has opted for the Monument Side Table in Tundra Grey and Pallino Table Lamp and believes no bedroom is complete without styling on your bedside tables.

Great lighting looks beautiful and helps create a relaxing environment before sleep time.

“It sets the mood. Just before bedtime, if you put on lamps while you read, it signals to your brain that it’s time to relax, and it helps set your mind into that calming space.”

With a well-chosen colour palette, layers, a great rug, lighting, and a cosy reading nook, your sleeping space becomes a room that you look forward to being in and truly relaxing.
